My advice is get somehthing that runs well, and comes with antivirus and antispyware that automatically updates and removes threats without constant alerts of "do you want to....?", as well as popup blockers, etc. In my experience, older people, or anywone just starting with computers, often don't understand the point of protection or don't know what the alerts mean.
