Ok, bad example...
In Star Wars, they have this wipes when they switch scenes right? Other movies have their own wipes or fades or whatever you call them. And in some of them, they stick to some style of switching scenes and then after an hour or so into the movie, they don't do it anymore. I can't think of any example right off the top of my head.
