Go back to Mobissimo - there's another fare thru OneTravel for 1978 US - which is about 2500 Canadian... Still high, but it's lower than 3000.

If you can get to Toronto easily... the fare drops to about 1900 US...

There were also a few really cheap flights (under 700 dollars US) from London to Cairo -if you can get a cheap flight to London elsewhere, it's more work, but it might be an option for you)
