Not sure if this is correct, but isn't Quake 4 (by Raven Software) using the Doom 3 engine? I'm sure that game's still pretty far off, but at least there will be some multiplayer then.
I personally don't care too much if there's no multi. I'm buying this game in the hopes of being scared senseless, so if it does that, than it's all good. Even the leaked alpha with its retarded enemies was still pretty damn creepy.
It would be nice to have some simple editing tools so players can make their own levels, extend the life of the game, but judging from the complexity of the maps, I doubt the average gamer will be able to do that. Still, aside from Half-Life 2, this is the only game I'm really looking forward to.
