Seems to me that you can still enter from the alley if you so choose.
They have come a long way since they were just a shoe repair store owned by the current owner's father. If the story I heard was true, the old man was getting requests by the local gay community to fabricate leather S and M gear (I guess they figured that if he could sew your shoes, he could sew you a cock and ball harness.)
Soon the old man realized there was WAY more money in S and M then there was fixing smelly old shoes.
And the rest is history.
