USB2 or Firewire will work fine. USB2 I believe is a bit more widespread than Firewire. Most everything comes in USB2 format, so for me, it just seems easier to get whats more prevalent.
Western Digital and Seagate make really good drives in my opinion. Look for 7200rpm and higher.
