WANTED! 40+ External HD.
Okay, so since Tiger is pouncing on us so swiftly,
I'm looking for a cheap external hard drive so I can back up my ibook. I really wanna find one that I can have for the whole backing up, and then just sell it. Yeah, I'm totally looking into ebay, but I just wanna know from you TFPers, whats are some good brands to buy? And RPM speeds? What's "standard"? What type of connection would you recommend, firewire or usb 2.0? Is there anything else I should know when buying one?

USB2 or Firewire will work fine. USB2 I believe is a bit more widespread than Firewire. Most everything comes in USB2 format, so for me, it just seems easier to get whats more prevalent.
Western Digital and Seagate make really good drives in my opinion. Look for 7200rpm and higher. You might look at Newegg and PriceWatch to see good prices on drives. www.newegg.com www.pricewatch.com www.cpu.com

If you are comfortable with assembling one yourself, I'd recommend getting a cheap hd and an external enclosure. You can find external enclosures that are both usb2 and firewire.
I have found decent prices on cases here. http://www.dealsonic.com/exen.html |
