I would think that the pertinent questions would be:
1. How often do you take it out, and for how often? If daily, but for short durations, you're probably ok. The Ring doesn't know if it fell out or if it was removed - as long as the concentration of x inside the vagina remains high enough to man the frontlines in the war on sperm, everything is probably fine. If you were to take it out for an hour, then replace it for an hour, then take it out for an hour etc - I would think you might run into difficulties.
2. What type of storage is the Ring receiving while outside the vagina, and how does this storage affect the transport properties of what I would imagine would be a porous membrane through which the active chemical is delivered. For instance, might not be the best idea to let it dry out etc. I would think a moist ziplock bag would be a good choice.
Other than that, I suppose the proof is in the proverbial pudding...if it works while taking it out for sex, then I...ummmm...guess it works.
