Couldn't you just take it to a camera shop and have them look at it. Don't they usually take a look at it for free and then hit you with the big "ok, here's the problem and it'll cost the price of three of these brand new cameras to fix it"? At least you could figure out what's wrong with it that way. Is it under warranty still? Prolly not since the warranty for cameras usually aren't very long.
