Stoneware is really frickin hard ceramic. It gets this way by being fired at a very, very high temeperature.

Most regular ol' flowerpots would melt or disintigrate in the kiln if you fired them at cone 10.

There are a zillion kinds of clay, all of which can be fired and made into "ceramics." I THINK that most flowerpots made in Mexico are relatively fragile. They are fired at a very low temperature. Though they look the same, pots made in Italy are made of higer-fire clay, and are much harder.
