Tilted pot (heh, bet I got Flyman's attention)
My indoor cacti are the most spoiled plants in the clavus household. They have custom homes. I threw these on a wheel. For those of you who care, they are all stoneware, fired at cone 10 (ooo! hot!!!)
![]() ``````````````````````````````````````` This pot is porcelain. I put some blue slip on it and carved some wild-looking fishies all over it before the first firing. Clear glaze went on for firing #2. Sadly, the long-time resident of this pot did not survive the Winter. ![]() ```````````````````````````````````````` This pot causes cactus erections. It is also porcelain. ![]() `````````````````````````````````````````````` I went a little crazy with glaze and resists on this one. The effect was not what I thought it would be. But I still think it’s cool. ![]() ``````````````````````````````````````` Oooo! Pretty colors. The glaze did exactly what I wanted it to do. Huh! What are the odds? ![]() ``````````````````````````````````````` I carved out Mr. Sun, filled the carving with colored slip, fired it, then glazed it with clear. A lot of work for a marginal effect, but the sedum loves living here. ![]()

Some day I'll have to build my own...after the kids are older and less likely to lock one-another inside it. ------------------------ The basic rule of not killing a cactus is to SOAK the soil when you water it. Water the hell out of it every couple of weeks in the Summer. Once a month in the Winter. Lots of cactus novices fear overwatering and end up with a sad cactus.

No. I take a lump of wet clay, throw it on a wheel, center it, drop a hole, pull out the sides, raise the walls and shape it. Then I let it dry very slowly (so as not to crack) in a damp-box (an old refridgerator that I built shelves into). Once it is leather-hard, I carve it a little and/or put colored slip on it, and flip it over and put a foot on the base (and put a hole in the bottom for the watter to come out). Then I fire it. Then I glaze it. Then I fire it again.
ta DA! From shapless mound of dirt, to cactus condo! I do mugs too, but all my best ones I gave to my friends, so I can't post pix of them. ...in other words, I make them from scratch.

Does it take a good while to create one of these?
If it didn't take too long, could you make something for us here on the TFP? ![]() Could you create one with the TFP logo on it?

Heh! TFP logo mugs would be awesome. It doesn't take a lot of hands-on time, but the drying and firing and whatnot take a few weeks. But I'm not throwing right now and I don't have access to a kiln anyway. I put my wheel away, and promised myself not to do any more creative things (other than my weekly comic) until I finish the two giant projects I on working on. In other words, June/July...

Whats the difference in Ceramic and Stoneware? Are regular flowerpots Stoneware or Cermaic? Are they not all made from the same materials? I dig your pots, the one in which you said it didn't come out right I thought was one of the better ones. Cool use of colors and shading. Damn I wish I had an eighth of your creative ability. If you need something jury rigged, I'm your man, but if you want something creative and artistic, don't come my way.
*sighs*

Most regular ol' flowerpots would melt or disintigrate in the kiln if you fired them at cone 10. There are a zillion kinds of clay, all of which can be fired and made into "ceramics." I THINK that most flowerpots made in Mexico are relatively fragile. They are fired at a very low temperature. Though they look the same, pots made in Italy are made of higer-fire clay, and are much harder.
