I played the Planetside beta and I can tell you that the release version is going to be utter crap. It's incredibly laggy, unbalanced, and there is really no reason to play after a couple of weeks. There are very overpowered two weapons in particular, both in one empire (team)'s arsenal, so they completely dominate the entire server.
SOE is rather fond of releasing crap adn then patching it up to tolerable standards in the following months. I suggest against buying Planetside, as if you are looking for a real FPS, you will be very disappointed.
Planetside is the "diet-coke" of FPSes for burned out EverQuest players that have never played a game from id/Raven/EPIC.
