Really, it's still quite poetic. You see this in the end of Return of the Jedi where Luke cuts off Vaders hand as he begins to succumb to the dark side only to realize, as he looks at his own mechanical hand, that he is in danger of becoming just like his father. It's a rather blatent metaphor that the dark side causes one to lose one's humanity.

I read the vast majority of the books out there (in fact, I've got a little mini-library that I plan to give my nephew to read) and I don't ever remember this being mentioned. If fact, I seem to remember a scene from Shadows of the Empire (the one with Prince Xizor, if I remembered the title correctly) where the writer mentions Darth Vader sitting in his egg-shaped chamber trying to breathe on his own instead of using the big black suit. He goes on to imply that his body is wasting away because of his use of the Dark Side.
I'd have to find my copy to be absolutely sure, but I believe I've got that right.
I'm also under the impression that nothing,
nothing "Star Wars" gets released with out Big George's seal of approval, so it stands to reason, in my mind at least, that there's at least a divergence in the storyline that needs to be accounted for.
I am not a geek.
