I was always under the impression that it was the fact that he used the dark side of the force that forced him to the big black suit. I thought that was the catch to using the dark side. Immense power quickly attained, but hell on flesh and bones. Unlike the light side where there are no adverse effects, but was much more difficult to master.
That was nice. That was poetic. That was a damn good idea. Certainly not in the realm of Anakin falls into a lava pit and has to be 're-built' a la the Six Million Dollar Man route, but who am I to argue with George?
I hope at the end of the movie whenever Darth Vader moves real fast we get that 'cha na na nan na' sound effect Lee Majors got.

Spoiler: Yes, Anakin falls into lava and must become machine to stay alive. As far as I know, this has been a plot point with Vader for a long time - at least, it's how I've always understood his origins since I was a kid. It must be from one of the books or something. Really, it's still quite poetic. You see this in the end of Return of the Jedi where Luke cuts off Vaders hand as he begins to succumb to the dark side only to realize, as he looks at his own mechanical hand, that he is in danger of becoming just like his father. It's a rather blatent metaphor that the dark side causes one to lose one's humanity.
