This little blurb in the Sports section of USA Today caught my eye, because the high school is fairly local to me, and the coach is so well known. The book is called The Miracle of St Anthony, a aseason with Coach Bob Hurley and basketball's most improbable dynasty. The movie rights for the book have already been sold.
Everything I know about this coach just says to me, yay him, it couldn't happen to a more deserving person. Some factoids about this guy, as a basketball coach, in 33 years coaching at St Anthony's, a catholic high school in a very depressed area of jersey city, his record is 843 - 96. OK, so it's just a game, in all the years that he's been coaching, all but one of his players have gone on to college, 100 of those kids have gone on to play college ball, and 5, including his son, went on to the NBA.
In an age where it's all about the money, it's nice to read about a guy, who is exactly where he wants to be, coaching at a high school where he's needed and where he does a hell of a lot of good things.
Installment from the book
To actually make something out of this thread, I freely admit that I'm a sucker for sports stories, got any favorites of yours...
