Feel Good Story
This little blurb in the Sports section of USA Today caught my eye, because the high school is fairly local to me, and the coach is so well known. The book is called The Miracle of St Anthony, a aseason with Coach Bob Hurley and basketball's most improbable dynasty. The movie rights for the book have already been sold.
Everything I know about this coach just says to me, yay him, it couldn't happen to a more deserving person. Some factoids about this guy, as a basketball coach, in 33 years coaching at St Anthony's, a catholic high school in a very depressed area of jersey city, his record is 843 - 96. OK, so it's just a game, in all the years that he's been coaching, all but one of his players have gone on to college, 100 of those kids have gone on to play college ball, and 5, including his son, went on to the NBA. In an age where it's all about the money, it's nice to read about a guy, who is exactly where he wants to be, coaching at a high school where he's needed and where he does a hell of a lot of good things. Installment from the book To actually make something out of this thread, I freely admit that I'm a sucker for sports stories, got any favorites of yours...

I'm with you Maleficient, Bob Hurley has walked the walk and has not just touched, but literally saved the lives of kids that everyone else gave up on. Thanks for the heads up on the book - I will look for it. By the way - if not for his son I would have turned my back on the Blue Devils altogether! Laettner - bleh.
My fav sports story isn't so much inspiring as just touching. I'm an OSU alum, and when Eddie George went to the NFL, his mother refused to quit her flight attendant job at TWA. Wasn't proper to quit a job, she thought. She worked every day to raise Eddie and his siblings on her own, no reason to quit now. The day Eddie signed his first contract, worth Heisman millions obviously, his mother called him and said she couldn't come to the big event because she had to work an extra flight. Eddie was crushed, this was the day he wanted to give his moms his whole life, but he knew not to argue with her about it. Eddie's agent got on the phone without him knowing and argued with her for an hour before finally convincing her that should be with Eddie on that important day, July 1996. The agent sent a plane for her and she surprised Eddie at the signing... It wasn't until after dinner they heard that TWA Flight 800 had crashed with no survivors. That was her flight. Still gives me chills...
