if you're not set on southern italy, think about checking out rome, tuscany, venice, cinque terre etc also/instead. the south, if you didn't know, has a fair bit more crime and is a bit less friendly to tourists. it is quite beautiful in parts, though.
i'd skip over capri and instead check out Pompeii - it's not to be missed if you're nearby. and if you do go there, be sure to get some pizza at Pizza Margherita by the Circumvesuviano (train station). Naples is good for a day trip. never been to sicily.
if you can find someone to travel with, avoid a tour company. it's not hard to get around even if you don't speak the language and you'll appreciate the freedom
