They can tell you that they don't like copying and can even try to prevent you from doing so. No, it is a very common misconception, also a very gray area of copyright law which is constantly being tested because the laws can't keep up with the speed at which technology changes. The term copyright means the right to copy, without the copyright you cannot legally copy the material for any reason, profit related or not (there are, I know, exceptions to this on which you could base a substantial legal textbook). Analogies to video recording is also not accepatable since exceptions are specific not general. Read the link in my previous post for more info
