If you don't want to format your harddrive when switching motherboards, I believe you can delete all the devices in the device manager, shutdown the computer, move the harddrive and other components to the new motherboard, start and windows should be able to detect that things have changed, without need for a reformatting. I did this on my girlfriends computer, moving her harddrive from a P3 motherboard to a Athlon XP
