I find Janet Jackson...especially older Janet (Rhythm Nation, Janet) is great for getting a party started. Throw in a couple songs from when you and the other attendees were in middle school for some fun.
For my parties, I usually put together a mix of pop, R&B and peppy modern rock--so Justin Timberlake, the Killers, Christina Aguilera, Destiny's Child, etc. I also throw in some fun songs like "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye and Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff." I usually make two mix CDs for any given party--a quieter CD that people can talk over when the party is first getting started and a louder CD to dance to. Usually works out quite well.
