Logitech is a good brand, I have several of their models and they work great. However, there are a few things you should consider before putting out money for a set of webcams.
First of all is the connection type. As hambone said, broadband is the way to go, and I wouldn't even think about putting a web cam on dialup. But location is a key factor as well. Firewalls like they have at a university will stop almost every high quality video link program in it's tracks.
Web cam type: Logitech is a good brand, and I love them. But one problem is finding out which type of cam to buy. They offer several different models, and you need to find out which one will do what you need for cheap. Newegg.com carries a "Buddy cam" package, where you get two cams in one box.

If you need help finding programs to use let me know. I'm in a LD relationship at the moment as well, and web cams make it a little more bearable.
