The way it was described to me was this:
You can completely differ on your viewpoints on things and how you react to things, but it is how similar your personalities are that dictates if you will have an easier time being married or not. You can differ on some things (i.e. you an extrovert while she is an introvert) as long as you are alike in the majority of ways. Anything else puts a stress on the marriage. My wife and I are complete opposites in our open-mindedness and views of how the world should be, but we are just about exactly alike in our personality type. We have one of the happier marriages that we know of.
