best way is to get a good cardio regimen, either running, biking... that will burn your calories. lifting and ab exercise will burn some, but not much. they will strenghten your muscles. work your oblique muscles by holding weight on the side of your body parallel to your body in the upright position. then tilt from side to side. that should give you a good workout.
