Here's a line I've been using at work (retail):
Me: So how's your Christmas shopping comming along.
Customer: Fine, good, trouble, etc.
Me: That's good (or "That's too bad"). I have a feeling I'm not going to get started until the 24th. Which is better than last year. Because I didn't start 'til the 26th.
