No physician worth his salt is going to give you a prescription for diazepam (Valium) so you can "chill out". If you want a little assistance in relaxation physical exercise, be it a pick-up game of football or a quick fuck from the g/f, is a hell of a lot better than the diazepam. Or play a game at a local game store or community center. Even an occasional beer with friends is better.
It's better for you because the diazepam is forcing you to relax. You are not relaxing because of some pleasureable activity. Now, if your exam schedule is particularly demanding and you are having difficulty coping with the stress you need to think about changing your schedule, finding some new friends, or finding some other way to deal with your situation. Your stated reason does not warrant the medication.
If you are having serious stress management problems, then medication may be appropriate. But the smidgen that you have said about the topic does not lead me to believe that is the issue. Besides, I would start you out with propranolol first. Relaxing, yet does not encourage dependance.

P.S. The mechanism of benzodiazepines and ethanol are markedly different. While true that both drugs involve the GABA receptor, they do so in very different manner. Ethanol also triggers a wide variety of other receptors in the body which is what makes ethanol consumption pleasant as opposed to merely relaxing.
