I find it ironic that threads bashing smokers are allowed and people are given free range to say whatever rude things they want to about smokers. If I made a similar thread but replaced smokers with 'fat people' it would be locked and I'd probably get banned.
First of all, walking past a person smoking OUTSIDE is no more dangerous than having a car pass by you in a parking lot or sitting in rush hour traffic with a window open. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the air quality in a busy parking garage is much worse than walking past a few smokers in the open air. The only difference is that you can see and smell the smoke and you can't always see or smell teh car exhaust. Do you freak out about your health when you stand over your gas or charcoal grill? What about when you sit by the campfire? Lots of people willingly breath that shit in because they like the smell of the food cooking or the wood burning. Do some research on the science of combustion if you don't believe me.
Second, there is no such thing as 'dragging the smoke in on your clothes' The main dangerous chemical from cigarette smoke is carbon monoxide. It is a colorless odorless gas that is less dense (and hotter) than the surrounding air. As a result is diffuses upwards in the atmosphere. What you smell is the odor of the smoke, it affects the surrounding air no more than your colonge or perfume. Learn about the mechanisms of diffusion.
The nose can smell things in very low concentrations. Sitting inside 15 feet away from someone, you are not getting harmfull levels of and of the chemicals from the smoke. If that is your only exposure to cigarette smoke you will NEVER have negative health effects from it.
