I'm not sure I've ever heard of a printer, or any USB device needing to be plugged directly into the computer and not the USB hub. Kinda like saying my computer needs to be plugged in directly into a T3 line at my ISP and not through a cable modem, etc.
The printer is as dumb as the USB hub. It should work just fine.
Have you tried removing everything related to the printer and reinstalling? Have you tried a different USB cable?
