USB malfunction????
i have a problem
my brothers computer is telling me there is a USB malfunction and i am not able to use the printer since it is connect to the computer but oddly the mouse still works fine and it is also connected to the usb port. I tried unplugging the printer port usb out then back in but the funny thing is that sometimes it tells me there is a usb malfunction and it cannot locate hardware and sometimes it locates the printer……… I tired all usb ports but same thing happens. I also tried uninstalling the printer drivers and reinstalling but same outcome. And when it does locate the printer I am able to printer but when I shut off the computer for a day it will go back to not working anyone have any ideas how to fix this? |

the only thing i can think of is that some printers REQUIRE the usb cable to be connected to the computer itself, and not through a usb hub. it's that or possibly you are using a high-speed usb (usb 2.0) printer and/or cable on a usb 1 or usb 1.1 socket and your computer is selectively freaking out....

I'm not sure I've ever heard of a printer, or any USB device needing to be plugged directly into the computer and not the USB hub. Kinda like saying my computer needs to be plugged in directly into a T3 line at my ISP and not through a cable modem, etc.
The printer is as dumb as the USB hub. It should work just fine. Have you tried removing everything related to the printer and reinstalling? Have you tried a different USB cable?

could try uninstalling the usb controller on the system and reinstalling it, somehow the drivers may have become corrupt. Uninstall the printer and the drivers also and start fresh with it again. If that all fails a usb pci card is only like 5 bucks now.

The only thing that I can think of if the printer was hooked up to a hub and not directly to the pc not working, would be if it wasn't plugged into a powered USB hub.
Then again USB printers seem to have weird issues like this more then the old parallel port models... so if you have the option to use a parallel port/cable with your printer, that would be a workaround. |

I would say switch out the printers usb cable and see if it works, could besomething as easy as that. Since everything else usb works on the computer it seems to me it'd be more a problem with the printer itself. Try the printer on another computer and see if it works there.
