the only thing i can think of is that some printers REQUIRE the usb cable to be connected to the computer itself, and not through a usb hub. it's that or possibly you are using a high-speed usb (usb 2.0) printer and/or cable on a usb 1 or usb 1.1 socket and your computer is selectively freaking out....
