It could definitely be the motherboard, especially if you've already ruled out the video card. Before you install the video drivers, the AGP slot is most likely running in a PCI compatibility mode (non-DRI). Once the drivers are in place, the system can "turn on" the extra functionality of the AGP port, which if your motherboard is toast, could possibly cause the problems you're seeing.
