Problems with Direct3D
I reinstalled windows xp on a computer but I everytime I try to run a game or the Direct3D test in dxdiag, my computer freezes. I've tried reinstalling xp several times but got the same results.
I am running a Athlon XP 2000+ not overclocked, a MSI k7n2 mobo, Geforce 4 ti4200, and 256 megs of ram. I got the newest drivers for the video card and I have directx 9.0b (but I did try installing 9.0c but got the same problem). I think it might be my video drives. I also have some artifacts around my mouse and a few randomly placed around the monitor. ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? My guess, is that it is probably a bad video card.
Do you have any other video cards you could test as a replacement? The only other option that I could think of is that your power supply might be going and it could be not supplying enough power to run your video card in 3d mode... but that is pretty unlikely, and you would be seeing crashing pretty frequently if your power supply is that close to dead. |

Actually I have 2 ti4200's and they both do the same thing. I think its either the video card drivers or DirectX. I have another computer and I tried the cards and they worked fine. The problem doesn't happen until I install all the drivers (probably should have mentioned that before). Now that I think about it, it might be the mobo, but I've never had problems with it before. Im going to install windows 2000 and hope that works.

It could definitely be the motherboard, especially if you've already ruled out the video card. Before you install the video drivers, the AGP slot is most likely running in a PCI compatibility mode (non-DRI). Once the drivers are in place, the system can "turn on" the extra functionality of the AGP port, which if your motherboard is toast, could possibly cause the problems you're seeing.
