I have an allergy to certain kinds of deoderants/anti-perspirants. I found this out by accident when my mother bought me the wrong kind of deoderant of the same brand I use. At the end of the day, I smelled like I hadn't washed in weeks and had a huge rash. Perhaps his body chemistry doesn't work well with his deoderant? He wouldn't necessarily need to get a rash to get the other side effects.
