i've found that 9 times out of 10 when someone says they're suddenly getting random slowdowns it's cause of some sort of spyware. the fact that you ran hijackthis is prolly a good thing, as is the fact that you use firefox -- but just in case i'd snag a copy of adaware and maybe even spybot just to make sure.
the worst is when you get some form of VX2 on your machine and it decides to eat every cpu cycle in an insane advertisement downloading craze
