2 PCs, 2 damn annoying problems
Not really the most hazardous problems I've come across but certainly ranks with some of the most annoying.
On one side I have a PC used many for storing files and internet but I've been having a problem starting up. When I start it, it gets to the Windows is starting up screen then it hangs... I can get it working back in normal if i go into safe mode and run System Restore but I don't really want to do this every time I want to restart. I doubt it was anything recently installed either because it would have shown that right away by not starting after I installed the proggie but I already system restored it so I could boot. The side PC has a weird problem with explorer.exe. Sometimes when I load things up like firefox it just hangs for a couple of seconds then comes back but explorer is excruciatingly slow and takes like 20 seconds for the start menu to open up. Sometimes the monitor just turns off but the PC still runs. This one I thought it was my changed of the video card speeds but it even does this on its normal speed so I guess it can't be that right? |

Boot into safe mode and check the system logs. Have you installed any new drivers before this started happening?
I think you might want to run spybot or something to see if there are some programs running that shouldn't be. If you are comfortable looking at the registry then download HijackThis and see what you can remove safely. |

heh well if you have a spare day anytime i suggest you just bite the bullet and do a clean install after backing everything up. You may find a way to fix it but windows has a way of degrading over time anyways. You will eventually have to re-install, gaurenteed.

as bal8664 said windows does degrade over time.
caused by to many dead end registry entries, damage by spyware and viruses even after they are removed, and corupeted .dll's you can clean out the dead ends, temp files and such to extend the life of windows, but in the end a clean install is a complete fix.

Well I managed to fix the problem with the loading up part by using HijackThis thanks Bratwurst.
The thing about reinstalling Windows though is not really something I want to do just because this Windows install is no more then 2 months old. But the good news is that I think the problem stopped because I haven't had any problems since I posted. Either its because I haven't put my GPU on underclocked settings or because I just haven't opened many firefox windows |

i've found that 9 times out of 10 when someone says they're suddenly getting random slowdowns it's cause of some sort of spyware. the fact that you ran hijackthis is prolly a good thing, as is the fact that you use firefox -- but just in case i'd snag a copy of adaware and maybe even spybot just to make sure.
the worst is when you get some form of VX2 on your machine and it decides to eat every cpu cycle in an insane advertisement downloading craze |
