I know this may be a lame question to ask, but are your jumpers configured correctly on the new HDD? I also have a maxtor 120GB, and the jumper configuration is quite different from my maxtor 80GB. Also, to make sure you don't have a defective drive, is the hard disk spinning? I just went through this a few weeks ago with a bad 20GB drive, Win XP could not detect it. I found it wasn't even spinning! Just a couple thoughts to check out, hope that helps you some. Win XP detected my 120GB right from the start.

Edit: Also, where is it set on your IDE cables? That can also have an affect.
