New Maxtor SATA drive on ASUS A7N8X
Hi all. I just bought a Maxtor 120 GB SATA drive. I want to use it as a storage drive on my ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe 2.0 nForce2 motherboard. I can't get the damned drive to be detected by Win XP Pro, or in the BIOS for that matter. Any ideas? Please help. The drive is going back to compMEXICO on saturday if I can't get it to work. ("compUSA" is owned by a huge multinational corporation based in Mexico.)

Did you install the SATA drivers for your motherboard and the SATA drivers for the hard drive?

You say storage drive: You mean in addition to your existing drive that you have not formatted?
SATA drives can be a pain if you're installing windows on them. You need the drivers on a floppy and to insert it when prompted at the Win-install cd's boot request for any 3rd party RAID or SCSI drivers. (Hit F6 when prompted) I assume you are trying to view the drive through the disk manager in the Computer management MMC? (Rightclick my computer> manage) You may have to format it there first. If not, try Admin Tools> For mixed setup with an IDE and SATA, check out this thread for some other clues: http://www.techsupportforums.com/sho...&threadid=9166 Last question: If it's a slave drive have you jumpered it to be just so? Have you also jumpered your boot drive to be the master instead of just cable select? |

And this:
http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11477 You have (2) Bios's to set up, you set up RAID in the RAID controller BIOS, but do you have sata enabled, and set as RAID, not base , in your comp's main BIOS under intergrated periphials? It should be set as RAID |

I know this may be a lame question to ask, but are your jumpers configured correctly on the new HDD? I also have a maxtor 120GB, and the jumper configuration is quite different from my maxtor 80GB. Also, to make sure you don't have a defective drive, is the hard disk spinning? I just went through this a few weeks ago with a bad 20GB drive, Win XP could not detect it. I found it wasn't even spinning! Just a couple thoughts to check out, hope that helps you some. Win XP detected my 120GB right from the start.
Edit: Also, where is it set on your IDE cables? That can also have an affect. Last edited by KrazyKracka; 11-05-2004 at 11:16 AM.. Reason: added another thought |

I'm trying to use the SATA drive as "D" drive, or whatever it wants to come up as. I am not trying to boot XP Pro with it. The instructions say don't mess with the jumpers. I've tried both SATA ports on the board and tried a couple different molex connectors. BIOS doesn't see the drive and XP doesn't see it. Thanks for the help, folks.

Tried updating SATA drivers, no help. Nothing sees the drive. I see absolutely no settings for SATA in my BIOS (1007 Uber). I'm pissed. What a complete waste of time. I'll probably take it back tomorrow and get a WD PATA 120GB drive. (Unless anyone has any other ideas...)

Well, aktornado, I agree with you. But if it's a power issue it almost has to be in the drive. My Thermaltake 480 Watt Power Supply is pretty new and I've tried several different PS connectors. With this drive you can use either molex power connectors or SATA connectors. My PS doesn't have any SATA power connectors. Model number is 6Y120M0. I can't tell if it's running because my system has a lot of fans, drives, etc. Lots of vibration going on.

OK, I have isolated the SATA drive from the case. The drive is definitely getting power, as I can feel vibration and centrifugal force caused by platter rotation. So I guess it's a trip back to compUSA tomorrow. I'm done with this. I Flashed my BIOS, tried everything I could. I have installed many hard drives on my boxes and others. I've never been presented with such a hassle-factor. SATA can lick my nuts.

Oh well, I give up. No worries, it's going back in about 15 minutes. I'll worry about SATA when I upgrade to nForce 3 or 4. It's a shame, as I really wanted to get SATA to work. Oh well. Hassle-factor was getting too high.

I agree, it probably is something simple. And I feel like I gave up too soon. But all I wanted was a working 120 GB hard drive, now. My new 120 GB Western Digital is working just fine. And it was $20 cheaper than the Maxtor.

I've got an A7N8X deluxe, and by default it has the sATA ports disabled via a jumper on the motherboard. Drag out your user manual and find the sATA enable jumper. Once enabled, you should get a Silicon Image detection screen during POST before bootup. Your drive should be detected by the sATA chipset then. If you're getting the Silicon Image stuff during POST but your drive isn't being detected, check your sATA cable. If your drive is being detected properly during POST but doesn't appear in Windows, check your drivers and try using the Windows Logical Volume Manager to partition/format the new drive.
