I have never been obese, but I weighed in at about 190 pounds in high school. I was only 5' 5". Not really fat but chubby. I finally decided that I was really going to try to lose the weight. I would pick a bad eating habit every other week and fix it. I started with soda. Then I moved on to things that I used to gourge on (pop-tarts, ice-cream, little debbie snacks). You just got to change your lifestyle slowly, week by week. If you try to turn it around overnight you're doomed to fail.
