what you said is exactly what i read in my sexuality class in school...but I dunno if that is true. For example they say that men that have a fetish for women in stockings most likely experienced wearing stocking as a kid or when hugging their mother around her legs they liked the feeling of the stockings.
but in my opinon peoples likes tastes etc usually change as they grow i don't know how some certain "likes" can be carried from childhood
