It's because you aren't getting the whole pic downloaded. It's random because getting an incomplete download
is...pretty random
It is saved as a .bmp because the browser basically has to make a new picture from what it partially downloaded, and it's created as a bitmap. Refresh/reload/clear the cache if you aren't getting the format you're expecting.
