If "Dawn of the Dead 04" wasn't called "Dawn of the Dead" but rather "Zombies Attack the Shopping Mall", would it have have encountered so much contempt?
I am a big fan of the original Dawn; it's a classic, but I also enjoyed the "remake". It doesn't come close to the original, but it doesn't really try to...it is really an entirely different movie, just with the same name; the characters are different, the plot is different, the tone is different...the zombies are different. It just took the basic concept: small group of survivers seek refuge in a shopping mall from an outbreak of zombieism and makes a completely different movie.
I have heard rumours that the original screenplay was not a remake of the Dawn, and took place is some generic warehouse or something, but due to marketing reasons, the title was changed to Dawn of the Dead and was relocated to a shopping mall. I would not be surprised if this was true; all of the events in the movie would work equally well in a location other than a mall (contrast this to the original where the mall was an intergral part of the film).
