It's rad.
But still. Dawn of the Dead 04 < Dawn of the Dead 78

I thought it was a great remake. It was a little slow but if I remember correctly so was the original. It would probably be a better movie than the original if it had been made 20 years ago.
m0rpheus, I just saw that Shaun of the Dead is going to be out before Xmas.

Bah never!
The new one was far too preoccupied with making the zombies 'realistic', the original was more about character, wit and self parody, that's what made it so damn good. I mean in the remake, the zombies are these like really fast, terrifying creatures, in the original they were essentially a giant satire of the American public, slow, plodding, vacant, at the mall just because. (I'm not saying that all Americans are like this or anything, niether is Romero really, I mean he's simply paying out that particular archetype) who are treated somewhat contemptuously by the major characters, who punch and shoot them etc with glee. It was far more enjoyable since it wasn't perfect realism and never tried to be. Plus, the undertones of rampant misanthropy are delightfully dark and funny. |

If "Dawn of the Dead 04" wasn't called "Dawn of the Dead" but rather "Zombies Attack the Shopping Mall", would it have have encountered so much contempt?
I am a big fan of the original Dawn; it's a classic, but I also enjoyed the "remake". It doesn't come close to the original, but it doesn't really try to...it is really an entirely different movie, just with the same name; the characters are different, the plot is different, the tone is different...the zombies are different. It just took the basic concept: small group of survivers seek refuge in a shopping mall from an outbreak of zombieism and makes a completely different movie. I have heard rumours that the original screenplay was not a remake of the Dawn, and took place is some generic warehouse or something, but due to marketing reasons, the title was changed to Dawn of the Dead and was relocated to a shopping mall. I would not be surprised if this was true; all of the events in the movie would work equally well in a location other than a mall (contrast this to the original where the mall was an intergral part of the film).

Seen both old and new, own them both, love them both. My only prroblem is with the marketing of this new DVD release. As far as I can tell, nothing has been changed during the actual feature film part of the DVD to warrant it as a Director's Cut. All the "added footage" that was advertised was the post production , home movie type films and deleted scenes that are completely serperate from the feature. Now, I was completely happy with the version in the theatres, and this doesn't really change that, but I am a little upset that I was duped into thinking there was anything actually added to the film, and not just bonus features that have been on plenty of other DVD releases that didn't claim to be a brand new Director's Cut.

Are you sure that you got the Director's Cut? You sure you weren't ripped off? The directors cut is genuinely a new cut of the film and not just a DVD with bonus features. A thread on imdb.com discusses the changes: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363547/board/flat/12614149

I don't mean to sound insane, but is there any chance that I saw at least a partial director's cut in the theatres? Many of those changes that he speaks of in that link you provided I swear were in the theatrical version I watched. There are a few scenes that he mentioned had changed that I didn't pick up on while watching the DVD though, mostly extended conversational pieces.
Or maybe I just have a very over active imagination, who knows. Either way, I still love the flick. |

I hadn't seen the original Dawn of the Dead until shortly prior to the release of the remake, so maybe I just didn't have the nostalgia factor amping up the quality for me. I found it to be plodding and poorly acted. I understand the subtext of what Romero was attempting, and applaud him for it, but I just did not enjoy his film.
