hossified, you are correct about HPV. you are also correct that HPV IS the cause of cervical cancer, however it needs to be addressed that only specific subtypes are related to the warts, and other to the cervical cancer. Serotypes 6 and 11 are connected to warts, and types 16, 18 and 31 are related to cervical cancer.
One is more contagious when they have active lesions, but they are still in theory contagious... also, there are other lesions that look like warts that can be something else, like treponema pallidum - syphilis... best thing to do is go to the doctor.
