there's no hard date...i've seen a lot of theories. none are particularly convincing...save for one observation.
the question is not why the egyptians didn't record this. it's why *did*the hebrews?
why would your national story be one of slavery? it's not something you'd make up if you had the chance. so while i doubt that the story is historically factual in many ways...it must say something very true about the experience of the people....it is a narrative that would likely be suppressed if it didn't.
