NJ politics is among the most corrupt in the country. McGreevey seems to be more a puppet than a real leader. His close ties with some heavy weight NJ politicos (knowing them since being a kid I believe) lead him to the Governor's office. Corruption was looked at as everyday business here for many years. McGreevey's fundraisers have been convicted of illegal kickbacks, blackmail, fraud, etc. Top advisers used their (and his) political influence to give themselves the rights to billboards erected on the side of highways and then turned around and sold those rights for millions.
McGreevey is a pitiful excuse for a leader and the people of NJ are pathetically lacking in desire to change the current system. All they care about are car insurance and property taxes. Claim you will hold down taxes and fix insurance (and spend a couple million on ads) and you're good to go here in NJ. Once you get in you peddle influence and work to position yourself for either a nice private sector job or national office.
The Daily Record (one of the bigger newspapers in the state) is running a 5 part series starting this Sunday on the dozen or so people who control politics in the state. I look forward to seeing who they are (no doubt there will be some developers, perhaps some insurance industry people, a couple of lifetime politicians, and maybe a drug industry person or two thrown into the mix).
