I sometimes turn up at my girlfriend's house unannounced, usually on my way home from work. She actually likes being surprised like that, 'cause I usually only get to see her on the weekends and it makes her day
Only thing is she's like "sorry, my room's a real mess because I didn't know you were coming" no matter how many times I tell her I don't care about how messy her room is.
Other than that, I ring people up and I expect them to call me if they want to come round. Luckily they all do, I'd let them know how much it pisses me off if they did make an unannounced visit
