I'm pretty much a skeptic about this sort of thing, but I love a good ghost story. My own, alas, isn't terribly exciting...
My parents' house has a short hallway on the first floor. The kitchen and den are at one end, bathroom and cellar doors on opposite sides in the middle, living room at the other end. As a kid, I always felt a little uneasy in and around this hallway. At night, I tended to scamper through it as quickly as possible going between the rooms. Sitting in the living room, I didn't like to be in a position where I could look down it.
On a few occasions, I've seen what I can only describe as motion in the hallway. Not a distinct figure, just a sense of someone walking down the hallway, usually out of the corner of my eye, always moving from the living room toward the kitchen. On the most memorable occasion, my girlfriend and I were sitting in the den on a weekend afternoon, reading the paper as I recall. We both saw it at the same time, and we both looked up, expecting my mother to walk into the room. No one was there, and my mother, of course, was in another part of the house. The most interesting part of this encounter was the fact that the presence, or whatever, was distinctly feminine. We both expected my mother to walk in, not my father, even though it could have been either of them.
The strange part is that the house itself was new when my parents bought it, and the land it sits on was just a wooded lot before the house was built. One of the contractors working on it died on a camping trip before it was finished, but that doesn't explain the feminine presence. It also seems unlikely that he would have had any particular connection to this house, as I believe it was one of several being built at the time.
