How old are you? If you're still young you can sort of get away with eating poorly and not excercising as much because your metabolism is still pretty fast. It'll slow down as you get closer to your 30's and then you'll have to start paying more attention to excercise and your diet. Not to say that you should wait until you're older to start excersing, it's great to get a head start.
With that said, yes, if you've started running a couple of miles a few times a week you'll see some changes. Before you know it, you'll be able to run further and faster, your resting heart rate will go down (I think) because your heart'll be strong enough to send more blood through your body with every pump. You'll have more energy and will be able to burn more calories while you rest.
