Players with two way contracts get to go to the AHL. Meaning players that were always up and down with the NHL club are playing in the AHL. Players with one way contracts can go to other leagues that have no afilliation to the NHL and play. Most have chosen Europe, some have gone to Canada, and a few have chosen to go to some of the smaller U.S. pro leagues.
The AHL is always good hockey. Players that are hungry to make an impression or get the big club to notice them are always the most fun. Good fights, hitting, and scoring. Cheaper to watch too.
As for TV, I believe that the local sports stations are going to be showing more AHL games this year. I have heard that Comcast in Philly is planning on showing quite a few.
