For a pre-workout, i'd advise something such as a tuna sandwich an hour or so before, plenty of carbs and protein to keep you going.
After the workout is the best time for the shakes, as your body is screaming for food.
Brand wise, i'd say go for Optimum nutrition whey, nice amount of protein per serving, relativly cheap and danged tasty.
