hmm... well, i'm not sure how well an analog stick would work given the space constraints (it would have to be a short throw). also, for the games i play on a handheld i would prefer a d-pad over an analog stick were i forced to choose between the two.
i like your photoshop though... it seems like a analog stick would blend well into the ds. i'm doubting nintendo will include one, but ya never know.
i know you didn't want a ds/psp debate, but i feel this applies to all handheld consoles:
analog sticks tend to wear out. w/the home consoles you end up buying extra controllers or replacing old ones to negate this. an expensive handheld would have a smaller stick w/out the option of replacement. a tiny little analog stick as your primary means of control on a tiny little $200-300 system better hold up like a champ.
